tesi di dottorato in the city
Forse nulla, forse tutto.
casa mia.

whale talking - new series (6)
"The whale is dead! The whale is dead!",
some were shouting from afar...
Where was I?
Was I beside the whale?
Was I inside the whale?
Was I the whale?
I did not know,
I just knew they were coming
to collect my corpse...

expression in the performing arts
Expression in the Performing Arts is the Conference Procedings of a very stimulating conference I have been to in 2008. Here you can find the book details. This post is about the editing of my essay, "Is a Word Dead When It Is Said?: Relationship Between Text and Performance in Martha Graham's Letter to the World". On the first page of my essay there is a serious editing mistake which is not my own. The mistake consists in definying North American poet Emily Dickinson an 'English writer'. The editors of the volume have assured me that should a reprint be done, the mistake will be corrected, but, in the meanwhile, those who happen to read my essay and have some basic notions of North American literature might think I am an incompetent on the matter, which is untrue, given the fact that I graduated in Anglo-American literature at University and have written my PhD thesis on North American culture. That is why I have decided to write this post.

whale talking - new series (5)
These days the white whale
hardly comes close to me
She is not avoiding me
she does not have the strength
to do that
she is too weak
I saw her the other day
wandering around
as if she did not have
any specific direction in mind
It is painful to see her in this state...

I have tried to ride the white whale
today
I have tried to get closer and closer to her soul
I have tried to listen to her pain
I have tried...
and I managed to lose myself in her depressive state
her weak condition
her slow wandering
her whiteness is still so remarkably luminous
and yet so opaque
I can sense a huge void coming from her alabaster skin
a white hole which can divour me in a split second
today

whale talking - new series (3)
the whale has been sending me a strange message
I think she wants me to go with her
I think she wants me to be with her
in her final moments before passing away
I am scared and exhausted
her dying energy has become
like a huge cocoon
capable of consuming
all my creative oxygen
could it be that she wants me to die with her?
could it be that we need each other so much?
I think she wants me to go with her

whale talking - new series (2)
what can you do in a tempest of silence?
is it possible to surf the waves of indifference?
the whale is quite feeble today
she has hardly eaten anything
and the way she moves has considerably
changed
she looks tired
and torn
troubled
and tangled
in a spiral of nothingness

whale talking - new series (1)
I thought the whale had gone
I thought my task was finished
but
I was wrong
the whale has come back
it felt strange to see her again
floating around me
now I know why she is back
the whale is dying
and wants me to nurse her
and be with her in the final stage
of her life
I thought my task was finished
but
I was wrong
the whale has come back
it felt strange to see her again
floating around me
now I know why she is back
the whale is dying
and wants me to nurse her

whale talking (8)
I have parted with the white whale
and I feel empty and exhausted
I almost miss her huge floating mass around me
I am at the still point
where everything could move
and nothing does
I am left alone
on the edge of a windy cliff...

I almost miss her huge floating mass around me
I am at the still point
where everything could move
and nothing does
I am left alone

postcards from new york (4)

The Joyce Theatre was founded in 1982 by dancers for dance. It is the place to see good contemporary dance in New York. I was there for the Martha Graham Dance Company 2010 New York season, last June. I first saw the Company there in 2003. I alway like looking at the audience in these occasions, as they comprise some of the past and present dancers that made and make dance history in the United States. For example, you may see an old lady and think she has come to bring her nephew to the event, and it may be true. However, it is very likely that she knew Martha Graham in person and was maybe part of her Company in the 1970s.

Once upon a time there was a film called Flashdance. It was released in 1983 and it soon became a cult. Now, in the Big Apple, there is a gentlemen's club whose name recalls that film title. Curiosly, in the film the protagonist, played by Jennifer Beals, did work in a gentlemen's club. Here one of the most famous dance scene. By the way, in the dance sequences, Beals is replaced by dancer Marine Jahan. In the final solo, a female gymnast and a male breakdancer are also used.

postcards from new york (1)
I have been to New York last June for my research. This is a park behind the New York Public Library, 42nd Street Branch. There, I had a quick lunch after a morning spent searching for old articles from the 1940s, 1950s and 1970s. To me the trees almost look like dancers, don't you think?

very busy (occupatissima)
I am very busy with my PhD research at present and am unable to post regular updates. I will try every now and then.

whale talking (7)
"Suddenly the sea was filled with awsome singing, a song with eternity in it, a song to the land:
You have called and I have come,
bearing the gift of the Gods
The dark shape rising, rising again. A whale, gigantic, A sea monster."
Witi Ihimaera
The white whale is singing to me
the white whale is calling my name
we have been apart for weeks
and I feel empty and destabilised
I will reply to the white whale's chant
I will look into her (funnily enough it has become a 'she' during this journey)
eyes and activate my power to create
meaning through words...

Sometimes you need to let the whale go
sometimes you need to make some space
create a distance
so that you can take a look from a different perspective
I am trying to see it as an organic entity
which insistently floats around me
I am looking at its structure
its frame
it is beautiful and scary
huge and fragile

It is as if the whale were
slowly poisoning me,
the closer I get
the harder it is to taste the world outside its belly;
I am on a mission,
I know where I am going
I know the risks are very high
and yet I live and breathe with/in this big white whale...

writing the introduction
Writing the introduction to a book (because that is what my thesis is in the end) is one of the most difficult tasks you can have, because it means for you to have the general picture of your study and a good idea on how to trace it there. I wrote the draft of the intro to my thesis in a few days and I think I do have a general view of my thesis, but I keep going back to it with changes and doubts. I have a feeling it is going to be a long process...
