the political dance project

During its last New York season at the Joyce Theatre, the Martha Graham Dance Company launched its Political Dance Project, which consisted of a thematic approach to Graham's world (what I like to call her choreosophy). I saw two performances from this season and am reporting about them on the criticaldance forum, at this link. This is an interesting project as it focuses on dances that, mainly in the 1930s, dealt with political questions, like the hardships of the Depression years and anti-fascism. Among them, Chronicle (1936) is probably the most powerful piece. Parts of it were reconstructed in the 1990s and called Sketches from Chronicle. Here is "Steps in the Street", the second of its three parted sections.

Durante l'ultima stagione newyorkese al Joyce theatre, la Martha Graham Dance Company ha lanciato il suo Political Dance Project, un progetto caratterizzato da una prospettiva tematica nei confronti del lavoro di Graham (ciò che amo denominare la sua coreosofia). Ho visto due spettacoli di questa stagione e ne sto parlando nel forum di criticaldance (in inglese), a questo link. Questo è un progetto interessante in quanto si incentra su delle danze che, soprattutto negi anni Trenta, ebbero a che fare con delle questioni politiche, come le sofferenze degli anni della depressione e l'antifascismo. Tra queste, Chronicle (1936) è probabilmente la più potente. Alcune sue parti vennero ricostruite negli anni Novanta e chiamate Sketches from Chronicle.
